Please meet Callum Ruch!
Callum is 19 years old and began racing dinghies when he was 9, in the Opti class, out of Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club. Sailing for him is about more than just the competition, it is trying to harness the weather, an uncontrollable factor, into sport in the best way possible. He is a different person on the water, the racing starts and his mind locks in! Sailing brings him to life!
Callum moved to the skipper role in a 29er late in the Fall in 2021 and has attended regattas here in Canada, the US, and also in the UK for Open Worlds in 2023. In 2024, Callum and his partner Nicole Otton, sailed a dream season - Winning 29er North Americans, Canadians, and Sail Canada Youth Championships. They came 3rd in the US Youth Championships, and had so much fun representing Canada at the World Sailing Youth Championships at Lake Garda, Italy in July 2024.
For the 2025 season, Callum was accepted onto the Inaugural U21 North American Waszp Team, which was so excited to be joining the Waszp Swarm! The big adventure last year was to head to 2025 Waszp Games in Weymouth, UK. There were 214 Waszps at that regatta and he jumped right in, ending the season as 3rd in Canada.
In the 2026 season, the WASZP Games took place in March in Pensacola, Florida where he placed 6th overall in his fleet, and 2nd male. He has a big season still upcoming with Canadians, North Americans, and Americas taking place this summer! They are all on the path towards Lake Garda in 2027!
