THE MISSION

1) Demonstrate the ease of access to sailing to  those who think it’s only for the rich. Spread the love of sailing to everyone and provide access to sail keel boats and for some, race on an exciting platform, the Frers 33;

2) Focus on getting youth & other dinghy sailors to experience big boat sailing, allowing them to acquire big boat seamanship, teamwork, and communications skills that are not learned in dinghies, but an important part of their overall development as sailors, good team players, and leaders.

3) Develop the next generation of sailors who are interested in buying and sailing keel boats, perhaps even  competitively, and directing members to yacht clubs in the Montreal region;

Bill Thompson has skippered the boat for many years, knows her and her extensive gear well and loves sharing with others. The boat resides in the Montreal area at Pointe-Claire Yacht Club (PCYC). PCYC has an active racing fleet and sailors who encourage and help promote the program.

PROGRAMS

  1. Intro to sailing/racing – adults Fri evenings 5:30-9 June to Sep
  2. Advanced racing – Tues-Thurs evenings, 2 weekend days/month May to Sept, weekends Sept-Oct

  4. Corporate Team Building – on request outside of scheduled times.

SPONSORSHIP AND PHILANTHROPY - Help keep the program going!

This is an expensive boat to operate and maintain for a limited budget retiree. It also requires many hours per month of labour for the maintenance and repair of the boat and its considerable inventory of sailing and racing equipment. The time and effort are volunteered gladly (if not always joyfully). The actual costs are considerable.

Annual cost for the boat to be at PCYC is about $5000.

Hardware, bits & pieces, some professional maintenance varies between $2500-$3000/yr.

Sail replacement – on an inventory of 9 sails, one per year is the absolute minimum . I have never seen a racing sail last for 9 years. Sails cost thousands of dollars each even at half price (we try and buy lightly used racing sails from wealthy American sailors).

All this to say, we need your support through Wind Athletes Canada a long-standing Canadian Registered Amateur Athletic Association which can issue tax deductible donation receipts.
