Madeline Gillis and Tatum Howell have recently teamed up to compete together in the International 420. Their near-goal is to represent Canada at the Youth World Championship and 420 World Championship in summer 2018.
Maddie represented Canada with Georgia Lewin-LaFrance in the International 420 at the 2016 Youth Worlds in Auckland and placed 6th at the 2017 Youth World Championship in China, the event’s top-ranked Canadian Team, and the best Canadian finish in the I420 fleet at the Youth World Championship. Maddie is a 2018 recipient of Sail Canada’s Bill Burke Memorial Youth Elite Award.
2018 is an ambitious year for Maddie and Tate. The girls have created a training plan with guidance from past Olympians. In their first regatta, the I420 North American Championship in Miami, Florida in January 2018, they finished mid-fleet and were top Canadian boat. Another trip to Miami follows in February for the I420 Midwinter Championship—this regatta is the Canadian Qualifier for the 420 Teams being selected for World Sailing’s 2018 Youth World Championship. If selected, they will compete in Texas in July with the world’s best 420 sailors. From March to June training will continue in Florida, Toronto, Halifax, and Germany.
Maddie is a Grade 11 honour roll student at The Grammar School in Halifax, NS. Maddie has been so grateful for the support that she has received from her teachers as they assist her with her academics while she travels for training and racing. Tate attends Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute in Toronto in the specialized athletic program, BEAP. Tate is in Grade 10 and on the honour roll.
