2018 is an ambitious year for Tatum Howell (skipper) and Madeline Gillis (crew). The girls have been selected to represent Canada in the International 420 at the Youth Sailing World Championship in Corpus Christi, Texas in July, and at the 420 World Championship in Newport, Rhode Island in August. They will then head to Toronto for Sail Canada Youth Championships to finish the summer season.
Maddie and Tate have created a training plan with guidance from past Olympians and have been training this past spring in Toronto and Halifax. To compete against the world’s best, the girls head to Kiel, Germany in June to train and compete at Kiel Week.
Maddie has recently been named a member of Sail Canada Development Squad. She represented Canada with Sail Canada team member Georgia Lewin-LaFrance in the International 420 at the 2016 Youth Worlds in Auckland and placed 6th at the 2017 Youth World Championship in China, the event’s top-ranked Canadian Team, and the best Canadian finish in the I420 fleet at the Youth World Championship. Maddie is a 2018 recipient of Sail Canada’s Bill Burke Memorial Youth Elite Award.
2018 is Tate’s second year in the International 420 after racing Optimists at the national and international level.
Maddie is a Grade 11 honour roll student at The Grammar School in Halifax, NS. Maddie has been so grateful for the support that she has received from her teachers. Tate attends Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute in Toronto in the specialized athletic program, BEAP. Tate is in Grade 10 and on the honour roll.
Tate and Maddie greatly appreciate any donation to their sailing campaign.
